FAQs
Q: What is Foating?
A: Floating is a luxurious escape from the constant stress of life’s daily pressures. You float effortlessly on your back in a specially designed mineral spa filled with a clear Epsom Salt water solution. Both lightproof and soundproof, this peaceful space frees you of gravity, noise, and other distractions. As if in deep meditation, your body and mind achieve calmness, entering into a theta brain wave state resulting in a profound state of relaxation.
Q: What is R.E.S.T.?
A: The acronym REST stands for Restricted Environment Stimulation Therapy. It is a way to relieve stress and achieve profound relaxation by simply floating in 8 to 10 inches of warm salt water. “Some participants say they haven’t experienced this kind of peace since the womb.” (Ernie Randolfi, expert on stress management)
Q: Is there anything, specifically, not to do before I float?
A: It is advisable not to eat a heavy meal for at least several hours prior to floating. We recommend that you not shave the day of your float (or a minimum of 4 hours prior) as the salt will sting those areas. If you have any unhealed cuts or burns, we provide gel for protection.
Q: Can anyone float?
A: Yes, anyone can float, however, if you have a medical condition, we recommend that you talk with your doctor prior to floating.
Q: What do I do before floating?
A: You will enter the spa room for your entire session. You will shower prior to your float thoroughly. It is important to remove all hair products, soaps, lotions, and deodorant. Once your session is over you will shower again to remove the salt . . . that’s it!
Q: What do I wear?
A: You can wear a bathing suit if you prefer, but most people do not wear anything while floating.
Q: How sanitary is it?
A: Floating is extremely sanitary. With the combination of our filtration system which runs a complete filtration cycle on the water after every session and with the natural bacterial killing qualities of salt, the water inside the tank is cleaner than tap water. We take every precaution to provide you with the cleanest, safest and most relaxing experience possible.
Q: How does floating help to produce theta waves?
A: Although you can learn to generate theta waves by practicing meditation for many years, studies at Texas A&M and the University of Colorado have shown that floating increases production of theta waves simply by providing the environment to attain the meditative state. People who float quickly enter the theta state while remaining awake and consciously aware of all the vivid imagery and creative thought that passes through their minds, and the effect is reciprocal for up to three weeks.
Q: What if I’m claustrophobic?
A: Most people have a little bit of concern about being enclosed in a small space, its normal. Unlike old tanks, our spas are small rooms that allow you to stand up. In addition, you are in control of your environment at all times. You will want to keep the door closed to control the temperature, however, there is also a pane of glass so that you can see out and not feel closed in. You may turn a light on or play music if you want.
Q: What if I can’t swim?
A: There is only 10 inches of water in the tank. In addition, the water is incredibly dense because of the amount of epsom salts. You float on top of the water, similar to a cork no matter what size or shape you are. People often sleep in float tanks and there is no risk of rolling over even if you are asleep.
Q: I’m a large / small person, will I float?
A: The salts added to the water make it incredibly dense and therefore increase the buoyancy of the water. No matter what shape or size you will find yourself able to float easily similar to a cork on top of the water.
Q: What are the benefits of epsom salt?
A: Based upon the therapeutic powers of the mineral-rich Dead Sea, the Epsom Salts used in flotation spa therapy draw toxins to the surface of your skin, giving your body a powerful systemic detoxification. Mineral spa therapy helps to strengthen your immune system, trigger the release of endorphins, and reduce the level of harmful biochemicals in your body. It also provides great relief from mental and physical stress, fatigue, chronic pain, headaches, and arthritis.
Q: What if nothing happens?
A: Expectations are one of the greatest hindrances to having a good float. Just allow yourself to let go and know that whatever your experience, your body is receiving the benefits of deep relaxation.
Q: Will the salt hurt my skin?
A: No, the salt is actually very good for your skin and leaves you feeling soft and silky after your shower. If you have abrasions, scratches or other cuts, the salt can sting. We suggest you do not shave at least 4 hours before your session. A gel is provided for you to protect any potential areas of sensitivity.
Q: How many times do I need to go to feel results?
A: The benefits of floating will happen even with only one float, however, like any therapy, consistent and repeated usage amplifies the results. Expect to go 2-3 times before you can really notice the feeling and difference that floating can make.
Q: How will I feel afterwards?
A: People’s experiences vary. Sometimes you may experience the feeling of being extremely relaxed similar to after a good massage, but often people feel the opposite and have a heightened sense of alertness and energy. Be aware of how you feel after the float and give yourself some transition time as part of your scheduled float.
Q: Will I get cold, like staying too long in a bath?
A: No, the tank is heated all the time to the perfect temperature to heighten your floating experience. The temperature of the water feels warm when you get in, but in fact it is at normal skin temperature (93.5 degrees Fahrenheit), the perfect temperature for floating. In addition, the float suite is heated to a constant 80 degrees to ensure that you are always warm.
